Renovation quote vs estimate: what is the difference?
An estimate is a considered guess at what work will cost, and it can change. A quote is a specific price for a specific scope of work. The practical difference is not the word used but how precisely the work is defined — a number attached to a vague scope will move, whatever it is called.

What an estimate is
An estimate is a contractor's informed view of what a job is likely to cost before the scope is fully pinned down. It is useful early, when you are deciding whether a project is realistic at all.
Because an estimate is based on incomplete information, it should be expected to move as the work is defined. That is not a contractor being evasive — it is an honest reflection of what is still unknown.
What a quote is
A quote is a price for a defined scope of work. The scope is the important half: a quote is only as firm as the description it is attached to.
This is why two quotes for the same room can differ enormously. Very often they are not pricing the same job — one includes demolition, disposal and preparation, and the other assumes the space is ready to work on.
How to compare them properly
Compare inclusions before totals. Read each quote for what is in and what is out, and write down anything that appears in one and not another.
- Is removal and disposal of the existing work included?
- Is preparation — patching, levelling, waterproofing — in the price?
- Who supplies materials and fixtures?
- Which parts are subcontracted, and to whom?
- What happens to the price if something unexpected is found?
Why measurements matter more than they look
Most quoting disputes trace back to a measurement that meant two different things. Floor area and paintable wall area are the classic example: a room described as 100 square feet may have far more than 100 square feet of wall to paint.
